Scutage

A feudal tax paid in place of serving in the army. The Magna Carta (1215) article 12 specifically states that no scutage or aid shall be imposed on the kingdom unless by common counsel (agreement). Exceptions include, ransom for the king knighting the king's eldest son and marrying the king's eldest daugther. In all cases the scutage or aid should be reasonable.
